What Are Secondary and Tertiary HealthTypes?

Purpose

This article explains the meaning of secondary and tertiary HealthTypes and how they complement a client’s Primary HealthType to guide coaching strategies.

Before You Start

  • Every client has three HealthType influences: Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary.

  • The Primary HealthType defines core physiology and needs.

  • The Secondary and Tertiary HealthTypes help explain how a client thinks, learns, and interacts socially.

Step 1 — Understand HealthType Layers

  1. Primary HealthType defines physical structure, nutritional requirements, and emotional tendencies.

  2. Secondary HealthType influences cognitive style, verbal processing, and communication preferences.

  3. Tertiary HealthType reflects motivation, learning styles, and social interaction preferences.

Step 2 — See How the Types Interact

  1. Each layer adds depth to how a person functions and responds to their environment.

  2. The Primary sets the foundation; Secondary and Tertiary add behavioral nuance.

Example:
A client with a Primary Activator and Secondary Guardian may act quickly and energetically but also value routine and reliability.

Important Rule

Never coach based only on the Primary HealthType. Always consider all three layers to support holistic understanding.

Step 3 — Apply HealthType Insights to Coaching

  1. Use the Secondary HealthType to guide how you communicate and structure sessions.

  2. Adapt learning techniques based on the client’s Tertiary HealthType.

  3. Align your coaching plan with their layered preferences to support lasting behavior change.

Tips

  • Use HealthType layering to resolve coaching challenges (e.g., mismatched communication styles).

  • Explore secondary and tertiary traits in the Coaching Panel or Training Modules.

  • Reinforce trust by acknowledging a client’s full profile—not just their Primary type.
